We believe there should be access to after school clubs and youth clubs for ages 13-18 in the Erdington area. We feel that not enough is being done to keep the youth of the streets and out of trouble. If these types of places were available, and had activities to offer then we believe Erdington would be a friendlier and better place to live. Lack of these resourses for youths result in anti social behaviour and street gangs hanging around and causing trouble.
The idea of the workshops was to discuss how we can improve the local area, improve skills in Social Media, and understand how we can effectively campaigns and create action.
The event was a massive success, and gave us an insight in to the problems that exist for young people in the Erdington area. Key issues for young people include their frustration around the lack of employment and training opportunities, public transport and the facilities provided for them in the community .
Many young people feel that the high levels of unemployment in the area is the reason that crime exists. Many young people feel that they have little to do, nowhere to go and facilities do not match that of other areas such as Sutton.
It became evident that many people, although out of work are using Taxis to get around, rather than use public transport, as they felt it was overpriced and unsafe. We will be campaigning to get these points raised with local MP’s and decision makers, in the hope that we can truly make a difference to the local area.
Social Breakfast will be on a Birmingham Train tomorrow to interview 3 high profile politicians, kindly provided by Virgin Trains.
Highlights of the event can be viewed on the Politics show, Sunday 12.15 BBC1. The show will also be available on the BBC iplayer.
Our first question for MP’s will be about their manifestos, and why they think young people will listen to them. If you have any questions you think we should ask, please let us know at info@socialbreakfast.org
